Landsec

The value of sustainable retail

Project Story

Landsec is the largest commercial property developer and investment company in the UK - also listed on the FTSE 100 - with more than 2m square metres of commercial space including Nova in London Victoria, Bluewater Shopping Centre in Kent, Trinity Leeds and MediaCity in Greater Manchester.

Retail is a major part of their business and for the UK economy - contributing £86bn in 2022 and employing nearly three million people. Retail destinations and high streets are also closely linked with how people feel about where they live and urban patriotism.

Landsec wanted to better understand the changing nature of retail, public attitudes to ‘sustainability’, the potential impact of shopping shifts on the UK and what it means for policymakers.

The built environment contributes 215 mega tonnes of CO2 a year - which is more than all UK car, lorry and van emissions combined - and reducing it is a critical part of decarbonising our economy on the journey to net zero.

They commissioned Bradshaw Advisory to answer these questions. We undertook a literature review, key stakeholder interviews, new economic and data modelling as well as speaking to key policymakers to create a compelling and persuasive policy report
